Big portions of fresh sashimi at a cheap price ? Then Uosan is definitely the right place to go. In business since 1954. Here you can indulge yourself in all sorts of fish, raw, pickled, grilled, fried, cooked:  鯒さし (kochi / flathead sashimi) (430 Yen), 赤魚煮 (akauoni / cooked pacific ocean perch) (330 Yen), いさきやき (Isaki yaki / grilled grunt) (600 Yen), all excellent value !

But at Uosan you should be aware of the written and unwritten rules:

Close the door !  (summer and winter rule)

Don’t close the door !  (spring and autum  rule)

No kids ! (all season rule)

Queue up ! (Don't expect to win a seat by coming just around the opening hour. People starts queueing one hour before opening. But be careful to join the right line because since recently there is a bus stop right in front of Uosan.)

Do what you are told ! (Customers here wouldn't be granted the choice of where to sit. More than half of the seats on the counter on the 1st floor are reserved for regulars, who don't even have to queue. People unaware who make an attempt to sit there are immediately shooed away. And if you have been in the back end of the queue, you are most likely to be told to go upstairs.)


Don't take Japanese hospitality for granted. The staffs here are a little gruffly and may appear at first rather unfriendly, but once you start eating, that shouldn't bother you anymore. But I fear many first-timers will not come again. Well, this is apparently no problem for Uosan, the place is always packed.


1 min from Tozai-line Monzennakachou subway station exit no 2. Double U-shaped counters on the 1st and 2nd floors, tatami seating on the 3rd and 4th. Capacity about 200 persons. One additional rating point added for the non-smoking policy on the 2nd floor of the building. However, the other floors can be smoky if you are unlucky.

The small smiley is awarded solely for the pretty lady who serves on the 2nd floor. She can smile.
