Tsutahachi is a family business, since 1970. The inscription on the big lantern greeting the guests says 煮込 (nikomi / stew) 天下一うまい (tenka ichi umai / greatest taste under the sky), I call this self-confidence.
The relaxing place is run by a friendly senior couple. Grandpa takes care of Tsutahachi’s main “attraction”, which is the huge pot simmering behind the counter. The nikomi (650 Yen) comes in a large bowl, stew with a chunk of tofu. There is also a version with a boiled egg called 卵入り(tamagoiri) (700 Yen). Taste is good, I rate it a 大森一うまい (Ōmori ichi umai / greatest taste in Ōmori).
The warmhearted grandma is taking care of all the other dishes on the menu and - after taking the order - prepares them one by one in the back kitchen. Very recommendable is the 鯖なんばんずけ (Saba nanbanzuke / fried mackerel arranged with sweet and sour vegetable sauce) (420 Yen), delicious ! Even a quite simple dish like もろきゅう (morokyū / cucumber with grainy miso) (320 Yen) is nicely cut and arranged by grandma. Because she also takes care of the drinks, she already runs on full capacity when there are only 5 or 6 guests, I wonder how she would manage if the place ever gets crowded...
Located in a small road adjacent to Ōmori shopping mall, 3 min walk from JR-line Ōmori station. U-shaped counter and 4 tables, capacity of about 35 persons.
This place definitely deserves a double smiley !
Beer (633ml bottle): 550 Yen
