Michelin missed this place. Thank God !
Sushi Katsu was founded in 1984 and moved to this location in 2000. Second generation owner is Nobutaka Ōhashi, he runs the place together with his mother, who’s friendliness and smile is at eye level with Mrs. Saitō from Saitōsakaba. Mr. Ōhashi makes no compromises. Even though Yokohama fish-market is located much closer, he drives every morning to Tokyo’s Tsukiji, because he says the variety and quality there are better. Sushi Katsu offers a おまかせ (omakase / chef’s choice) menu, 10 plus dishes changing on a almost daily basis. On a mid-December day Mr. Ōhashi’s choice was: イカしんじょう (Ika shinjō / minced and steamed squid), 白魚 (Shirauo / ice fish), 牡蠣 (Kaki / raw Oyster), a plate with 鱲子 (karasumi / salted and dried mullet roe), あんきも (Ankimo / monkfish liver), ホタテのきもと白子 (hotate no kimo to shirako / scallop liver and cod milt), 白子の茶碗蒸し (shirako no chawan-mushi / steamed egg custard with cod milt), assorted sashimi of the day, a plate with grilled Tuna, Oyster, Monkfish liver, pickled paprika and cauliflower, celeries preserved in sake lees, 鱈子 (tarako / cod roe preserved in sake lees), 出し巻き卵 (dashimaki tamago / Japanese egg omelet), 3 pieces of Nigiri-sushi (Prawn, Tuna, Sea urchin, Miso soup with cornet fish and finally for desert mousse with sake lees. Taste: what should I say, “ambrosial” is the expression coming to my mind. At 6300 Yen, it is hard to believe that Mr. Ōhashi makes any profit, at prime locations in Tokyo he would easily fetch 3-fold for similar quality and volume. What was said for the food also goes for the sake-menu. Ōhashi-san makes no compromises. The quality of the sake he offers is on a top-level (refer to below pics), and priced at 300 Yen for the 70ml cup (only some “very specials” cost more), this is again a bargain.
By the way, the sake cups and many of the plates are handmade by one of Sushi Katsu’s regular guests, a University professor teaching Japanese pottery.
Unfortunately ( ? ) Sushi Katsu is located quite remote, in a residential area about 15 - 20 min walk from JR Yokohama-line Kozukue station. Insiders tip: call Sushi Katsu 10 min before you arrive at Kozukue and Mrs. Ōhashi will pick you up with her little Suzuki Van. I call this service !
L-shaped counter for 10 persons. Reservation is recommended.
