Since 1928 !! Located 1 min. walk from JR Jūjō station, this is a place where you instantly feel at home. Simple food, standard selection of drinks, very reasonable prices, wonderful atmosphere. The tables are made of massive pieces of wood, very nice, you can feel the history! The ladies here are extremely friendly.
もつ煮込み (motsunikomi / stomach stew) (250 Yen) and ポテトサラダ (potato salad) (220 Yen) are always on the menu, on an early October day there was also さんま焼き (sanma-yaki / grilled pacific saury) (400 Yen) and 小肌酢 (kohada-su / gizzard shad pickled in vinegar) (330 Yen).
Capacity is about 45 persons. Small groups (3 to 4 persons) are possible if you come at opening time or after 7 p.m. Can be smoky, so in Summer you better sit close to a window or the entrance door, in Winter there is unfortunately no escape.....
The sweet grandma (Mrs. Saitō) who runs the place once gave me this copy Saitosakaba.pdf from a local magazine. Young Marcello Mastroianni, pfff....
Saitō sakaba definitely deserves to be listed on the Izakaya section of the UNESCO world heritage list.
Beer (633ml bottle): 490 Yen
