Kawame is located in a Jiyugaoka backstreet, about 4 min from Tokyu line Jiyugaoka station. The place has a very relaxing atmosphere, a wide selection of seasonal food, sake, shochu and also wine. Almost daily changes on the menu. There are 4 guys working in the open kitchen, the master doing the sashimi, the very friendly ojisan at the grill, one in the back kitchen preparing cooked or deep-fried food, and the assistant preparing salads and side-dishes. The recommendation is just to go for any of the about 20 todays specials written on the whiteboard. All-time favorite: 鯖すし(yakisabasushi / grilled mackerel sushi roll) (1200 Yen). And don't miss the さつま揚げ (satsuma-age / deep-fried fish cake) (800 Yen). The sashimi is excellent.
My message to the management: there is room for improvement. The problem: the policy is to replace the master / head cook (the "face" of the place) every one or two years. The same goes with some of the other guys in the kitchen. Also the service staff changes too often for my taste.
Kawame is among the rare Izakaya offering non-smoking seats. Izakayasanpo proudly awards the “Smoke-free Izakaya” mark, together with one additional rating point.
Counter (18 persons), tables (8 persons), tatami seating in the back (15 persons).
Altogether: not cheap but good value, very recommendable. Reservation is possible. Credit cards ok.
Beer (500ml bottle): 700 Yen
