An Izakaya is not the bar at the Hyatt hotel. So don’t expect anything fancy.
A typical drink menu which I consider “good Izakaya standard” would be: beer, bottled and from the tap, one or two standard sake, served 燗 (kan / warm) or 常温 (jō-on / room temperature), cold 生 (nama / draft-style) sake, usually in a 300ml bottle, 焼酎 (shōchū / japanese vodka) straight, mixed with Oolong tea (ウーロン割り / ōlong wari) or as チューハイ (Shochu highball), sometimes “Hoppy” (low calorie beer-like beverage with only 0,8% alcohol, to be mixed with shochu), occasionally wine from the glass (quality not worth mentioning), no softdrinks at all or only a small selection, no coke fellows... If you had enough drinks, just ask for a お冷や (ohiya, glass of water) or お茶 (ocha / Japanese tea).
However, some Izakaya have an extensive selection of Shōchū or sake, so something like in the pictures below would easily earn 5/5 points on my drinks scale (try at Ajisen or Sushi Katsu).
If you like to know more about sake, I recommend to get yourself a copy of the guidebook written by John Gauntner “The sake handbook” (Tuttle Publishing).
